Round I
ADC offers a unique fusion of the historic ballet competitions, such as Varna, NY IBC, & USA IBC, while maintaining accessibility for the pre-professional student. Our competitive structure has been designed for the professionally driven student. We aim to educate and provide the necessary experiences for these students to grow in knowledge and strength to enter professional companies and the aforementioned international competitions.
Two Biggest Differences:
- All competitive rounds are held over the course of one weekend vs. several weeks, thus making ADC accessible to the majority of students.
- Focus is not on elimination, but rather earning the highest score, by remaining in the competition to its entirity.
A typical Round I Day:
- All required classical & contemporary soloists meet for the first time at a specified studio location, generally around 3-4pm. (competitors under 18 years of age must be present with a parent/guardian or coach.)
- Sign-in. At this time your Round I number is assigned. Numbers are alphabetically asssigned in each age division. (Numbers must be worn for the duration of the round.)
- All paperwork previously not completed, must be done at this time.
- Participants are split in their age divisions, and stay in their group for the remainder of the day.
Depending on the studio availability & scheduling, the order of events may be different for each age division.
Each Age Division completes the following:
- Technique class (not en pointe), with the Jury Panel present. (It is a full class at the discretion of the master teacher & jury members.)
- Both Male & Female participants learn a classical variation separate for their gender. Variation selection is revealed at sign -in. Female JR & SR Divisions, pointe is a requirement.
- Male & Female, ALL ages, learn a contemporary selection (between 30-45 seconds at length.)
- Once all selections have been taught, by age division, participants re-enter the Jury Panel's studio and perform the selections for evaluation.
After the Jury has seen all requirements, each judge will render a Round I score, up to 100pts. For example, if Judge 1 adjudication is 89, this score will be averaged into ALL of the participants' solos in Round II. This round is NOT an elimination round, however this score will pull up or down your solo scores of Round II.
Round I is important for several reasons:
- This where the Jury becomes acquainted with the individuals. Your displayed work ethic and the impression you make will remain with the jury for the subsequent round.
- The score affects your final outcome.
- Specific achievements from this round will be awarded.
- Some scholarships are being pre-selected.
